If you've ever wondered why modern art often emphasizes minimalism, geometric shapes, strong contrasts, and clear symmetry in its works or designs, it's because of the emergence and influence of Art Deco, a movement that began in the 1920s. This style celebrates modernity, progress, and industrialization, and today, it’s widely used in fashion, packaging, advertising, and architecture.
In contrast, some artists opposed this movement, believing that minimalism stripped away the intrinsic value of art and the intricate details seen in works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Art Nouveau is highly organic, showcasing the beauty of detail, flora, fauna, and the flowing curves of nature. Its philosophy was a reaction against industrialization and mechanization, encouraging handcrafted, detailed, and elaborate designs.
Below are images of two packaging designs for spirits, each reflecting one of these opposing styles.
